Feline Vaccination

What Vaccines Do Cats Need?

When your kitten is approximately six to eight weeks old, it's time for a series of vaccinations that help protect it from many dangerous diseases. There are core vaccines that all cats need and noncore vaccines that only some cats need.

Core Feline Vaccinations

The core vaccinations that your cat will need are for:

  • Rabies
  • Feline herpesvirus 1
  • Feline calicivirus
  • Feline panleukopenia virus
  • Feline leukemia

These shots also require a booster at 16 weeks and then again after one year. Cats generally need boosters and a pet exam each year. It's very important to make sure your pet has the right care and annual wellness exams and shots to defend it against illness.

Noncore Feline Vaccinations

Our vet will determine if your cat needs additional vaccines. If your cat is an outside cat or goes outside frequently, it may also need additional shots. Some noncore vaccines include those for immunodeficiency virus, chlamydia felis, and Bordetella bronchiseptica. Noncore vaccines are needed for cats based on their lifestyles and environments.

Importance of Feline Vaccinations

Getting your cat vaccinated is a simple and easy process that will protect your pet from potentially fatal diseases. Our veterinarian will create a vaccination schedule to ensure that your pet is protected year-round. Without vaccines, your cat can get sick from its environment or from other animals. Some diseases can even spread to humans. Certain illnesses can be difficult and costly to treat. Vaccines are a form of preventative care that help you avoid this.
