Tips for Trimming Your Cat's Nails at Home

At Wooded Acres Animal Hospital in Middle Island, NY, we understand that it isn't always easy to take care of your cat. If you have been trying to trim your cat's nails without success, we have some ideas that may help you get your cat's nails trimmed. From using human clippers that are easier for you to handle to taking a break between paws, it is possible to effectively trim your cat’s nails at home.

Take Your Time

It is not likely that your cat will sit still for a nail trim on all four paws at once. Try not to rush the process. When your cat is being cooperative, trim what you can. If your cat becomes become restless, take a break. Wait for your cat to go down for a nap and try to finish the nail trim when they are sleepy. Cat grooming takes patience and trust.

Try Some Catnip

If your cat mellows out after having some catnip, give your cat some catnip and let them get tired. Play with your cat during this time and let them enjoy the catnip. Once they calm down, you'll have an easy time finishing the nail trim and taking care of your other cat grooming needs.

Have Someone Help You

You may need assistance when grooming your cat at home. One approach is to wrap your cat with a towel before beginning the nail trim so they feel more secure. While one person holds the cat in the towel, the other person may complete the nail trim. This will be easier to do if your cat is tired as opposed to if they just woke up from a nap.
