What Is Cherry Eye?

Dogs can suffer from a variety of eye infections and conditions. One of the most noticeable ones is cherry eye. At Wooded Acres Animal Hospital in Middle Island, NY, our veterinarians can diagnose and treat conditions like cherry eye in your pets. We can also show you how to look for symptoms of cherry eye so you know when your pet needs treatment.

Cherry Eye in Dogs

Cherry eye is actually the common term that describes the prolapse of the third eyelid gland. Dogs are one of many mammals that have a third eyelid that sweeps across the eye for protection. It also contains a gland that creates a large amount of the protective tear film of the eye. Normally, the gland of this third eyelid is strongly connected to the lower inner rim of your dog's eye by a fibrous attachment. If this attachment is too weak, this can allow for prolapse of the gland. When the gland pops out or prolapses, you will see a red swollen mass that is located on the lower eyelid. It is called cherry eye because it looks similar to a cherry. This mass can vary in size and can cause inflammation and swelling.

If your dog has cherry eye, it needs to be treated immediately. Sometimes it can be treated with a massage or antibiotics and steroids. In more severe cases, the gland needs to be surgically replaced as soon as possible in order to minimize damage to the eye or the gland. This gland is important because i produces up to half of the watery part of your dog's tear film, and your pet is more likely to develop dry eye without it.

In most cases, the gland will start functioning normally again within a few weeks of the surgical procedure. You may need to apply antibiotic ointment to your dog’s eye for a few weeks.

If you notice a red mass in your dog’s eye, take it to our animal hospital right away. Our veterinary team can diagnose the condition and discuss treatment options with you.
