Senior Pet Care

Many pet owners see their furry friends as more like part of the family than simply pets. It is important to take care of them and to be mindful of their changing health needs as they get older. Here are four common issues that our team at Wooded Acres Animal Hospital of Middle Island want you to be on the lookout when it comes to senior pet care:

Hip Dysplasia- This is a particularly common issue in large or overweight dog breeds. With this condition, the hip joint becomes inflamed or damaged and the joint no longer fits together properly. This can lead to painful bone on bone rubbing, the joint can get stiff, and it can even dislocate during normal activities. While it is common in dogs, hip dysplasia can also happen in older cats as well.

Vision and Hearing- As our pets age, they will also experience changes in their vision and hearing. The first signs of vision or hearing loss is they are more skittish, more temperamental, less active, and begin wandering and acting like they are lost. If you notice changes in your pet’s behavior and you think their vision or hearing may be failing it is important to have them checked by a vet as soon as possible.

Dental Issues- Dogs and cats only have one set of adult teeth and after living a long and active life they can start to develop dental issues. Missing or loose teeth, damaged teeth, gum disease, and other issues can start to really become a problem as your pet gets into their senior years. Normal dental care routines may not be enough and more advanced care may be needed to make sure that their teeth and gums do not cause them any pain or discomfort.

Cancer/Tumors- The final issue all families who have older pets need to be prepared for is the increased chance of cancer and tumors. Older pets tend to be more prone to developing tumors and other growths, both cancerous and benign, and these will need to be diagnosed and treated by veterinarian professionals. The most common types of cancer seen are, bladder, skin, stomach, an
